The marks on the glass screens that technology users normally try to ignore or get rid of are the focal point of Surface Tension. The textural conflicts in these pictures record how we now spend our lives. They’re not just grime; they’re evidence of what just happened, of the otherwise invisible. People are becoming far more visual than verbal. We are all using images as language -- emoticons come to mind, so does Instagram -- but this linguistic use of images requires a complicated dance of the fingers, a repertoire of gestures that work best when invisible and unnoticed. Surface Tension freezes and brings those “invisibles” to the fore, forcing us to consider how mediated these communications are, through our bodies, our devices, our wallets and even our government.
